The Stargate Command Offworld Research Outpost, better known as the Gamma Site, was one of Stargate Command's primary offworld facilities. It was destroyed by R-75.

History

The Gamma Site was one of several outposts established under the supervision of Brigadier General Jonathan J. O'Neill. While the scientists associated with the Stargate Program had been advocating an offworld research base for years - and indeed, offworld research had taken place on worlds like M4C-862 for short periods - it was the events of Jack O'Neill's first weeks in command that reinforced the value of keeping precarious and unpredictable subjects of study away from Stargate Command's primary operations.  (SG1: "Prodigy", "Zero Hour")

The facility was constructed at some time after the Alpha Site on P4X-650, and after the upgrade of existing Beta Site facilities on PB3-865. It was a relatively small facility compared to its peers, and unlike the new Alpha Site - which had been constructed underground for defensive purposes - it was built on the surface of its planet, a measure that the defeat of Anubis allowed to feel somewhat safer, as well as atmospheric conditions that interfered with sensors and transporter technology. The new facility allowed Stargate Command to be more discerning about its research: while items of technological interest were still brought back to Stargate Command or passed on to Area 51 for further study, many curiosities of a biological nature - essentially, anything that had the potential to breach containment - was diverted to the Gamma Site. The Gamma Site also acted as the offworld end of Stargate Command's new quarantine procedures: teams who suspected they had been exposed to some sort of pathogen or contaminent were now redirected to the Gamma Site (rather than the Alpha Site, as per prior proceedure) for screening and treatment before being allowed to return to Earth.  (SG1: "Covenant", "Threads", "The Scourge")

The facility was placed under the command of Colonel Stewart Pearson, who had previously been attached to the Stargate Program as a military advisor to Doctor Elizabeth Weir during her administrative review of SGC operations, following the inauguration of President Henry Hayes. Despite the facility's small size and scientific focus, it still remained a military outpost, and was equipped with a hangar and runway to deploy a small squadron of F-302 interceptors for defense.  (SG1: "Lost City", "The Scourge")

During the Ori Crusade, an organism dedicated R-75 was under study at the Gamma Site, suspected of having some sort of connection to the Priors. It was quickly - and unfortunately - discovered that despite their outwardly herbivorous nature, the creatures were preferentially carnivorous, and once exposed to that food source would undergo rapid multiplication, turning a few individuals into a full-blown plague in short order. During an inspection tour by the IOA, R-75 breached containment and began to feed on the base personnel, with the IOA representatives and their escorts, SG-1, barely escaping before the base - and eventually the planet - was overrun. With the Ori threat ongoing, there are currently no active plans to build a new Gamma Site.  (SG1: "The Scourge")
