Major General Jack O'Neill is the head of the Office of Homeworld Security, and the the former leader of Stargate Command and SG-1.

History

A member of the United States Air Force since the Vietnam War, O'Neill served as a test pilot as well as with Air Force Special Operations Command. Following the death of his son, his unique combination of skills, experience, and grief saw him recruited to Project Giza to lead the potentially one-way Abydos Expedition through the Stargate, should Doctor Daniel Jackson be successful in opening it. During the mission, O'Neill's team ran afoul of the Supreme System Lord, Ra, killing him in the process and inadvertently sowing chaos throughout the Goa'uld Empire.  (Stargate)

A year later, O'Neill was once again reactivated from his retirement, to lead a second expedition to Abydos, investigating a breach into Cheyenne Mountain by soldiers loyal to Apophis. Appointed the leader of SG-1, the flagship team of the newly established Stargate Command, O'Neill led a mission to Chulak, further fermenting dissent amongst the Goa'uld by orchestrating the defection of Teal'c, First Prime of Apophis. Over the years that followed, O'Neill and his team contributed to the defeat of several System Lords, including Apophis (twice), Hathor, Cronus, Nirrti, Mot, Marduk, Ares, Anubis, and many others. He also facilitated peaceful relations between Earth and many offworld cultures, including the Nox, the Asgard, the Tollans, the Tok'ra, and the Free Jaffa Nation.  (SG1: "Children of the Gods", "The Nox", "Thor's Hammer", "Enigma", "The Tok'ra", "Serpent Song", "Into the Fire", "Double Jeopardy", "Enemies", "The Warrior", "Metamorphosis", "Prophecy", "Lost City, Part 2", "It's Good to be King", "Threads")

O'Neill inherited the ATA gene from one of his ancestors. He was able to access a repository of Ancient knowledge on two separate occasions, requiring the intervention of the Asgard to save him both times. He was able to operate an Ancient weapons platform during the Battle of Antarctica, and destroyed the System Lord Anubis using a Ancient Gateship. His genetic status attracted the attention of the Asgard scientist Loki, who created a clone of O'Neill — although protective measures placed in O'Neill's DNA prevented the clone from maturing correctly.  (SG1: "The Fifth Race", "Fragile Balance", "Lost City", "New Order", "It's Good to be King")

Following the discovery of the Ancient Ayiana in Antarctica, O'Neill was infected by the same plague that had wiped out many of the Ancients. He was cured by a Tok'ra symbiote.  (SG1: "Frozen", "Abyss")

After the Battle of Antarctica, General George S. Hammond was promoted to the Office of Homeworld Security, and O'Neill assumed command of the SGC. Under his tenure, O'Neill authorised the Atlantis Expedition, expanding Earth's influence to the Pegasus Galaxy in search of the lost city of Atlantis, which had previously been located in Antarctica. A year later, Hammond retired from the military to accept a political appointment, with O'Neill replacing him at Homeworld Security, with a promotion to Major General.  (SG1: "Lost City", "New Order", "Rising", "Threads", "Avalon", "The Fourth Horseman")

Following the discovery of living Ancients aboard the Lantean ship Tria, the Atlantis Expedition was asked to leave Atlantis. O'Neill later travelled to the Pegasus Galaxy to assist Richard Woolsey in petitioning the Ancients for continued access to the city, which was achieved after the Ancients were wiped out by the Asurans. O'Neill returned to Earth soon after, and remained in charge of Homeworld Security; he was present on the new Tok'ra Homeworld for the ceremonial estraction of the Ba'al symbiote from its host, believed to be the last System Lord.  (ATL: "The Return, Part 1", "The Return, Part 2"; SG1: Continuum)

Following an attempted attack on Earth by a Wraith Super-Hive, O'Neill was promoted again, and the Office of Homeworld Security was folded fully into the rest of the Stargate Program as Homeworld Command.  (ATL: "Enemy at the Gate"; SGU: "Air, Part 1")
