Agent Edmund Burke is a member of the Central Intelligence Agency, currently working with the Office of Homeworld Security.
History
Agent Burke previously served with Jack O'Neill as part of a Black Ops unit. He earned a black mark on his record for his involvement in a friendly fire incident. It later emerged that the operative he had shot, Woods, was in the process of betraying his team to the enemy: a fact that Burke covered up, in order to preserve the pension and benefits due to Woods' wife and family that would have been withheld if Woods' actions he had been exposed. (SG1: "Evolution, Part 2")
Several years later, Burke was in de facto exile, on deployment to Honduras when Daniel Jackson and Bill Lee were abducted by rebels while searching for the Telchak Device. Burke assisted in the rescue, witnessing the reanimation of one of the rebels through the Ancient device, and admitting the truth of their shared past to O'Neill in the process. For his help, and honesty, O'Neill promised to make arrangements for Burke to be reassigned to a more pleasant assignment; he followed through on this following his promotion to Brigadier General, recommending Burke as a potential resource to Kerry Johnson of the CIA during her investigation into the Goa'uld infiltration of The Trust. While Johnson's Anti-Trust Task Force was not intended to be a long-term assignment, the subsequent involvement of Ba'al and his associates drastically extended its usefulness. By the time of the Ori Crusade, Burke was the de facto choice to lead any tactical response efforts, coordinating raids on Trust and former Rogue NID safehouses in the hopes of finding abandoned intelligence that might offer insight into the Goa'uld's plans and activities. As part of a series of overtures by the IOA towards more proactive participation in such oversight and investigations, Burke was enlisted to escort a group of representatives from the IOA to the Beta Site, which he hoped would serve as an unofficial audition for the IOA offering him a more long-term role within the Stargate Program.
