Commander Kvasir is a member of the Asgard, and commander of the O'Neill-class Asgard Warship Carter.

History

Kvasir first encountered Stargate Command during an alternate reality incident that caused several alternate versions of SG-1 to arrive at the Stargate Command in our universe. He arrived to assist the SGC in lieu of Thor and Heimdall - Asgard with whom the SGC was better acquainted - who were engaged in sensitive business in another galaxy at the time. He lent Stargate Command a time dialation device and later a directed energy weapon to assist in resolving the issue, and has generally shown to be less rigid in his interpretation of the Asgard High Council's policy on sharing technology than his peers.  (SG1: "Ripple Effect")

He later assisted Stargate Command in its attempts to disable the Ori Supergate at P3Y-229 by establishing an outgoing wormhole. When these efforts proved unsuccessful, he remained aboard Odyssey during the ensuing battle, (presumably) operating the Carter remotely for the duration. To date, this is the only instance in which an Asgard vessel has engaged in combat alongside any facet of the Earth fleet, although Hermiod has participated in a number of conflicts as part of the Daedalus crew.  (SG1: "Camelot", "Flesh and Blood"; ATL: "The Siege, Part 3")

During the SGC's attempts to use naquadria to augment their shields against the Ori's powerful beam weapons, Kvasir and Hermiod were present to "assist" on behalf of the Asgard, though their orders from the High Council were quite strict as to the extent to which that assistance could extent. When the Beta Site came under attack, Kvasir's ship beamed numerous survivors to safety.  (SGR: "The Arrow")

Mythology

In the Norse mythology of Scandinavia, Kvasir was either born as part of a peace treaty between the Æsir and the Vanir — from their saliva, in some versions — or was part of a prisoner exchange between the two factions. In the latter version, he is described as the wisest among the latter faction of gods. In one myth, his blood was mixed with honey to create the Mead of Poetry, granting skaldship and wisdom to whoever drank it — including Odin. His name is thought to be linked to kvass, a fermented drink popularised by Slavic cultures. Fluids, beverages, and the discovery of fermentation are frequent features of his mythology.

Kvasir is also an instrumental participent in the capture and binding of Loki after the death of Baldur; though how this relates to the Asgard scientist of the same name is unclear.

Behind the Scenes

Kvasir was voiced by Trevor Devall in 3 episodes of Stargate SG-1. He also provided the voice of Hermiod, and voices Emperor Palpatine and Admiral Ackbar for Lego Star Wars among many other roles.

In fan sources, the term "Vanir" is often used to describe the Asgard encountered in the Pegasus Galaxy in "The Lost Tribe"; there is no indication that the Asgard Kvasir or Freyr have any affiliation with that group.
